Your family may be the type to play football every Thanksgiving, or maybe your family has never touched a ball before. Regardless of your current commitment level to family sports, playing sports together can be a great idea. Here are a few reasons that you should begin playing sports in your family, or reasons to keep it up if you already do!
Exercise – Regardless of age, sports can be a great source of exercise. Exercising together can motivate everyone to get their regular dose of exercise and stay in shape. It can also create a culture of exercising that children will continue to uphold as they grow up, maybe even when they become adults. If you set aside a specific time and dedicate it to family sports, you can encourage this important means of exercising for everyone.
Family bonding time – Given your busy lives, you may not get to spend as much time together as you would like. With homework, household chores, school, work, food preparation, and hopefully eight hours of sleep a night, there can be little time left for family bonding. If you set aside special time to play sports together, however, you can guarantee at least an hour of quality family bonding every time you play.
Friendly competition – If the two benefits above are not enough to convince everyone to don their jersey and suit up for sports, try this tactic. Make the game a little more interesting by making its outcome have an effect on everyone involved. Perhaps you can wager something on the game, like household chores or making a nice Saturday night dinner. Maybe you can have a family trophy that travels between rooms. Whatever works for your family and gets them riled up will work just fine.
If there is any resistance in your family to starting or to keeping up a family sports time, try using some of these reasons. If that does not work, pull rank. You are the adult, right? What you say goes. They will thank you later for it.
